Mackenzie’s family tradition of excellence in the practice of law dates back to 1795, the year his 4th great grandfather Stephen Eno (1764-1854) was admitted to the Bar. Stephen opened the Eno Law Office in Pine Plains, New York in 1814.
Today, the building is the oldest of its kind in the State of New York, and preserved as a museum. Some of its papers date back to the Revolutionary War period.
Eno’s son William (1800-1874) served there as well as Dutchess County District Attorney and State Assemblyman in Albany, and his grandson Frank (1845-1933) was a dean of the Dutchess County Bar Association.
Frank's son William Rudd Eno (1882-1971) was admitted to the New York Bar in 1907 and worked for Bell Telephone Company. William's mother, Rachel Rudd Eno, was a member of the Roosevelt family and 5th cousin of both former U.S. presidents.
Another of Mackenzie's 4th great grandfathers, The Honorable Charles Bartlett Phelps, (1788-1858), attended America's first law school, founded by Tapping Reeve in Litchfield, Connecticut, and served as probate court judge, state senator and Speaker of the House in Connecticut.
